Short answer
A clogged (blocked) DPF is one so loaded with soot or ash that exhaust flow is restricted. Signs include a DPF warning light, power loss and limp mode. A soot blockage can often be cleared by regeneration; a heavy or ash-based blockage needs professional cleaning.

Clogged by soot or by ash?
The difference matters. Soot burns, so a filter clogged mainly with soot can often be cleared by a successful regeneration. Ash does not burn, so a filter restricted by ash after years of use only recovers with DPF cleaning. A specialist can usually tell from the vehicle’s history, the ECU’s soot and ash values and a flow test.
Can a blocked DPF be cleaned?
Yes, in most cases. If the ceramic is undamaged, off-vehicle cleaning removes soot and ash and restores flow. If the filter has cracked or melted, often from a regeneration on a very heavy soot load, it must be replaced. See cleaning vs replacement.
DPF still blocked after cleaning or regeneration?
If the filter blocks again quickly, the cause was not fixed: look for injector, EGR, turbo or sensor faults, and check how the vehicle is used. If the filter is still restricted immediately after cleaning, the clean may not have removed the ash, or the ceramic may be damaged. A before-and-after flow test answers that.
Symptoms
-
DPF warning light on
Often the first sign.
-
Loss of power
Back pressure limits engine output.
-
Limp mode
Engine output reduced to protect components.
-
Regeneration not completing
Fan running, high idle, repeated attempts.
-
Poor fuel economy
More fuel for regeneration and against back pressure.
Causes
-
Short, low-speed journeys
Not enough time or temperature for regeneration.
-
High ash load
Normal after high mileage; accelerated by the wrong oil.
-
Faulty sensors or hoses
Regeneration not triggered or stopped early.
-
Excess soot from engine faults
Leaking injectors, EGR faults, boost leaks.
How to fix it
-
Regeneration
For a soot blockage on a healthy vehicle.
-
Off-vehicle cleaning
For ash or packed soot, with an intact ceramic.
-
Repair the cause
Essential, or the filter will block again.
-
Replacement
Only if the filter is cracked, melted or cannot be restored.
Common DPF fault codes
| Code | Meaning | Typical next step |
|---|---|---|
P2463 |
DPF restriction: soot accumulation | Check soot load; regenerate if safe or clean. |
P242F |
DPF restriction: ash accumulation | Ash cannot be burned; clean or replace. |
P244B |
DPF differential pressure too high | Confirm with sensor and hose checks, then address the restriction. |
Generic OBD-II codes. Manufacturers also use their own codes; always confirm with a scan tool and the vehicle's service information.
