Short answer

Clean the DPF if the ceramic is intact and the cause of the blockage has been fixed. Replace it if the substrate is cracked or melted, if cleaning cannot restore acceptable flow, or if the catalyst coating has failed. Try a regeneration first when the problem is soot alone.

Start with diagnosis

The right choice depends on what is in the filter and what condition it is in. A specialist should read fault codes, check differential pressure, inspect the faces of the ceramic and, ideally, flow-test the filter. Skipping this step is how people end up replacing filters that could have been cleaned, or cleaning filters that were already damaged.

When cleaning is the right choice

  • The filter is restricted by ash after high mileage.
  • Soot has packed so hard that regeneration cannot clear it.
  • The ceramic shows no cracks, melting or crumbling.
  • The fault that caused the blockage has been found and fixed.

When replacement is necessary

  • The substrate is cracked or melted, often after an uncontrolled regeneration with a very heavy soot load.
  • Flow is still poor after a proper clean.
  • The catalyst coating no longer works and the vehicle cannot pass its emissions test.
  • The housing is physically damaged.

Replacement filters come as original equipment, aftermarket or remanufactured units. See DPF filter price for what affects the cost and DPF filters for what to check when buying.

What about removing the DPF?

Removing a DPF or disabling it in software is illegal for road vehicles in many countries, causes emissions-test failures and can affect insurance. It is not an alternative to cleaning or replacement and this site does not cover it.

Regeneration vs cleaning vs replacement

Aspect Regeneration Cleaning Replacement
What it removes Soot only Soot and ash (off-vehicle) Swaps the whole filter
When it suits Soot build-up, short-trip use Ash load, packed soot, intact ceramic Cracked, melted or failed filter
Filter removed? No Yes for a full clean; no for on-vehicle methods Yes
Relative cost Lowest Medium Highest
Fixes the cause? No No No: the cause still needs diagnosing
